Salla municipality
History
People have been living in this area since the 16th century.
Salla has been an independent municipality since 1857.
Salla is on the eastern border. So after the Second World War Salla lost the biggest and the most important villages. Nowadays they are a part of Russia. Many of our great-grandparents had to leave their homes and move into another village.
In the 1960s Salla had more than 11,000 people. Nowadays the population is about 4,000. People had to move out to find a job. Most people moved to Southern Finland or to Sweden, very many moved to Gothenburg.
